Base Communities

Autonomous religious communities often associated with liberation theology.  These communities, often built of illiterate peasants and proletarians of the third world, joined together with the aim of studying biblical texts under the guidance of a priest and then acting together according to social justice from a particularly Christian orientation.
Cavanaugh, William. “The Ecclesiologies of Medellín and the Lessons of the Base Communities.” Cross Currents, 44:1. Spring, 1994: 67-84.
