Editor’s Note: This is the fourth of a series offering a primer on Christian Anarchism. Please read part one, part two, and part three before proceeding.
In working through this series (where I’ve oh-so-briefly explored the complementarity of the way of Jesus and anarchism and the way the anarchic impulse has been expressed in Christian scriptures and history), I’ve [...]

Editor’s Note: This is the third of a series offering a primer on Christian Anarchism. Please read part one and part two before proceeding.
For most Christians, there is one big reason for rejecting anarchism: it isn’t biblical. Or is it? A superficial reading of the Bible reveals a God who thinks of himself as a [...]

A Divine Impossibility: a primer on Christian anarchism, part 1

by Mark Van Steenwyk 8 September 2011

Generally, Jesus Radicals exists to explore the intersection of Christianity and anarchism. Most people think such a combination is an impossibility (or a delusion). It would be a mistake to suggest that bringing the two together is mere novelty. Most of the negative reactions to such an interplay are based upon misunderstanding. Most folks assume [...]

Repenting of Christianity

by Mark Van Steenwyk 11 May 2011

If we are going to follow Christ, we need to repent of our Christianity.
Granted, there is no such “thing” as Christianity–Christianity has always been a messy constellation of ideas and traditions. But, for the most part, few (if any) of those ideas and traditions remain untainted from the stain of domination. So, I grant that [...]

Over the weekend, I was part of a small group that explored areas of Chicago’s south side under the umbrella of “Seeing the City through Prophetic Imagination.” The day of learning and theological reflection, which was organized by the SCUPE urban ministry program, focused on the former Cabrini Green housing projects, the Auburn Gresham neighborhood [...]

Recently tears came to my eyes as I began to read about the Trail of Tears. In 1830, the United States Congress passed the “Indian Removal Act” which was the catalyst for the Trail of Tears. The Trail of Tears was the forced disconnection and displacement of the Cherokee people from their ancestral homeland. The [...]

Thumbnail image for The Iconocast Episode 4: Interview with Waziyatawin (part 2)

In the conclusion of our interview with Waziyatawin, we continue to grapple with how Christianity needs to come to terms with its imperial history. We need to repent with more than just words. We must ask ourselves, “what does justice look like?”

Christianity is Empire, part 1

by Mark Van Steenwyk 7 April 2010
Thumbnail image for Christianity is Empire, part 1

The argument that Christianity is intrinsically oppressive is nothing new, but it persists. That’s because it is true. Christianity, at least as it is understood by the majority of Christians throughout the ages is inherently oppressive and will inevitably lead to Empire. A Christianity that is willing to use the Sword will always nurture Empire.
