The Seattle Catholic Worker is looking for new live-in community members as we plan a move to a larger house on October 1st.
Founded in October of 2012, we are a radical Christian community in the Catholic Worker tradition, committed to serving the oppressed and marginalized, crying out against the evils of Empire, and struggling to bring about the inbreaking of God’s Kingdom. Our website’s url is http://seattlecatholicworker.wordpress.com
We currently serve a weekly meal to immigrant day laborers in Rainer Valley and to groups of homeless folks on Beacon Hill. We also collect and distribute clothes, blankets, toiletries, and other life essentials, as well as offering up our home in hospitality to all friends of the community, including those we serve.
In addition to our ministry of hospitality, we host two monthly events: a potluck that typically falls on the last Sunday of the month, and a performance/open mic night (KUMBAYAWESOME for short) on the second Friday of the month. We also lend solidarity to movements for justice: most recently, we’ve marched in the Seattle Trans Pride Parade and engaged in a Good Friday public witness against drone strikes. We are in the beginning stages of beginning to organize with some of the workers we’ve met serving our meal.
Our members convene three mornings a week to join in prayer together, as well as meeting one evening a week for discernment, communal decision-making by consensus, and conflict resolution. We also have plans for a weekly vigil focused on resistance and a radical bible study group.
If the rhythms and work of our community appeal to you, we’d love to get in touch and begin the discernment process. Anti-imperial, anti-oppression, and anti-war stances are central to our life and work, and a shared understanding of what this means in practice would be necessary for a prospective community member. Our community also strives to be open and affirming to folks in the LGBTQ community, which is one of the many ways we attempt to live out God’s love.
