Come to me, all ye who labor for a living

by Paul Munn 26 May 2009

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Mt 11.28-30)
These words of [...]

Can a Christian Be Rich?

by Administrator 26 May 2009

Can a Christian be rich? That depends on how you define “rich”. If being rich means earning much money, it is neither good nor bad, because you can earn much money and still give it all away to the poor and the needy – and there’s nothing wrong with that. But if being rich means [...]

Number 4

by thaipeaks 23 May 2009

One day in seven, we were told,
One year in seven years,
To help to ease our growing old,
Give time for healing tears.
Though rest has now become today
A new four-letter-word,
We all would do well to obey
The commandment of our Lord.
Nature, art, and solitude
(A silent place is best)
Though long ignored, can form the food
From which a man can [...]

Radicals Resting in God’s Fury: Brennan Manning’s 'The Furious Longing of God'

by Administrator 18 May 2009

Why should Christian radicals – ordinary and otherwise – read Brennan Manning’s books?
Because if we’re honest with ourselves, we’ll admit that many days, our principal efforts lie in one or two good but ultimately idolatrous pursuits: ministry (doing good things for God) or community. Spurred on by the deficit of practical action we’ve seen in [...]

"Sustainability" was not in Jesus´ vocabulary

by Paul Munn 18 May 2009

A discussion today with a friend reminded me of this part of my journal, kept while living and working at a Catholic Worker house:
In a discussion last weekend, someone mentioned that a big concern for ministries like Catholic Worker houses (soup kitchens, homeless shelters, etc) is “sustainability.” Keeping the place from being run down, for [...]

Rethinking the Lord's Supper

by Administrator 11 May 2009

In a tragic twist of irony, the venue in the Christian faith that was intended to unify believers of diverse stripes and beliefs has actually divided and split the church in untold ways.
I’m referring to Communion. The Lord’s Supper. The Eucharist. The Table.
It goes by many names, and has been practiced many ways. [...]

physician, heal thyself

by Paul Munn 11 May 2009

No movement, no life. Unless a grain falls and dies… He took a hot breath and stepped out. But he stopped abruptly when he reached his shiny car, every surface reflecting the blazing sun. My power is made perfect in weakness. Taking off his stethoscope, he gently laid it on the gleaming hood, and turned towards home. It would be a long walk, he thought.

Deutscher Sieg (Lucifer, Part I)

by Administrator 11 May 2009

A priest may be a better bet. He could take your confession. You could say ‘Father, I was ashamed of my own nature. I looked with lust upon a man — but was afraid to tell him. Afraid of my friends’ mockery. So I helped them beat the shit out of him. I betrayed him because I was afraid to love him..

Can theology help us anymore?

by JoshuaDbauIII 7 May 2009

Perhaps this post should more accurately be titled ‘toward a theology that matters’. What I mean to say is that theology seems so very disconnected from actual life, any Theologian, worth listening to, will tell you that only a theology that makes a difference in the actual lives of those who adhere to it [...]

In the Infinite abyss

by JoshuaDbauIII 7 May 2009

In the grand scheme of things the humanity of God is vital to the contemplative reflection of individual Christians and to Christian communities, that God came to be with us, that God continues to be with us, that God reveals God’s self to us are vital to the project which God wills, the restoration and reclamation of humanity and the cosmos.
